Why did we need to build the Tsengwen Reservoir? What is the function of Tsengwen Reservoir？

Taiwan has abundant rainfall every year, however, due to the variation of rainfall in different seasons, and the fragile geology with steep slopes and high flow velocity, most of the rainfall flows into the ocean within a short period of time. If the water cannot be intercepted on time, water scarcity might occur in drought season. Therefore, it is necessary to build a reservoir. Tsengwen Reservoir can provide water for the irrigation of Chianan Plain; it also has function of hydraulic power generation, water supply, flood prevention and tourism.

What is the area of Tsengwen Reservoir, how much water can it store？

Construction of Tsengwen Reservoir was in 1967 and completed in 1973. It interrupts the flow of Tsengwen Creek and forms a wide lake. The water area can reach 1700 hectares when full. The effective water volume (the volume above minimum water level) is almost 600 million m3. It is the biggest reservoir in Taiwan in terms of storage volume.

How can Tsengwen Reservoir generate electricity by water? How much electricity can be generated every day? How to utilize the electricity generated？

The hydro generator was installed in the power plant, therefore, when the water discharges from Tsengwen Reservoir to Wushantou Reservoir, the energy generated by the difference of water level could be used for power generation. The full capacity of power generation could reach 1,200,000 KW, and the electricity will be merged into the power supply system of Taiwan Power Company for utilization.

People are saying that Tsengwen Reservoir could have paired operation with Wushantou Reservoir, could you provide some explanation？

Regarding the paired operation of Tsengwen Reservoir and Wushantou Reservoir, the water resource of Wushangtou Reservoir is coming from the water of Tsengwen Reservoir after the water is discharged for power generation. The water flow entering Wushantou Reservoir through Wushanling tunnel from Tsengwen Creek, then discharging from Wushantou Reservoir to Chianan run-off channel for the water supply of industries, residents and irrigation in Tainan Area.

How does Tsengwen Reservoir operate during typhoon or storm period？

The operation of Tsengwen Reservoir is based on the “Tsengwen Reservoir Operation Summary and Flood Gate Operation Rule, Ministry of Economic Affairs”. According to the rules, when Central Weather Bureau announces the alarm for typhoon or storm, Tsengwen Reservoir has to be operated based on the reservoir water level. The reservoir will store the water when it is in low water level and there is no need for flood prevention operation. When the reservoir water level and the water volume reaches the level of flood prevention operation rules, the flood discharge gate will be opened for flood prevention operations. The purpose of operation is to protect the safety of the dam and to reduce the river flow at downstream of Tsengwen Reservoir in order to protect the life and property of people downstream.

Is the Tungkou camping site of Tsengwen Reservoir open for camping and barbecue？

The Tungkou camping site inside of the Tsengwen Reservoir scenic area was closed due to the damage of debris flow caused by typhoon in 1999. It is now opened for camping and barbecue after the basic water and soil conservation and the restoration work of the camping site has been completed. The log cabin area is still under planning therefore it is not opened yet. Otherwise, although the Tungkou camping site is opened for camping and barbecue, the safety after dark has to be concerned by yourself since there is no charge and management arranged by the bureau.

Is Tsengwen Reservoir open for fishing？

To protect tourists, there are 4 fishing areas that are announced: “Water Park Area”, “Fongchueiling Area”, “Chiayis Farm Area”, and “Dapu Lover's Park Area”. How much is the entry ticket for Tsengwen Reservoir Scenic Area? Is there any special discount？

The charge standard of Tsengwen Reservoir Scenic Area is: Adult above Junior School – 100 NTD, children in elementary school, police and military personnel, elderly above 65 years old – 50 NTD. Groups of more than 30 people could have 20% discount. Handicapped people, retired government officials and teachers, and children in kindergarten or under – free. For parking: large vehicle – 50 NTD, small vehicle – 40 NTD, motorcycle – 20 NTD.
