Summary

The Gaoping River Weir is located in Dashu Dist., Kaohsiung City, 2km upstream from the Gaoping Railroad Bridge. It is one of the important water resource development projects in the wake of Nanhua Reservoir and Mudan Reservoir. The weir only takes water during high flow periods and worked with Nanhua Reservoir after it was completed. With a maximum supply of 500,000 tons of water per day, it considerably helps to meet the water resource needs of the Kaohsiung area.

This weir, equipped with a rubber dam and a fixed weir on the existing deep river channel, can only raise the water level but store the water. Its design level of abstraction is 16.0 m, the quantity of abstraction is 35cms. Downstream quantity of water right and river dilution flow are kept at 37cms. As well, the weir is equipped with a fish way for migrant fishes to lay eggs upstream. After this project was completed, the influence on river safety, ecology, environmental protection and society were minimized.
This project was executed on February 16, 1994, after being approved by the Executive Yuan under the document No. Tai 83 Jing 05689 and was originally slated to be completed in December 1997. But its completion was extended to the end of June 1999 after being approved by the Executive Yuan under document No. Tai 85 Jing 29643.

Project Benefits
1、 To stabilize river deep grooves and ensure water in-take to lower costs of water use.
2、 Reduce ground water pumping in Gao Pi area, conserve ground water, alleviate problems of ground subsidence and settle local disputes on rights of water use.
3、 This river/weir operates in coordination with upper stream of Nanhua Reservoir to meet the demands of water use in Kaohsiung and Tainan area till year 2005. in the later stage, operation in coordination with Zengwen and Mei Nong, Ma Jia, and Chong De Reservoir to enhance the potential of water resources in the southern part.
4、 Greatly improve on the existing water in-take quality and minimize negative local feedbacks.
5、 Provide citizens with water-friendly landscape to improve the quality of life.
6、 It sets a good example of coordinated ground water use and perpetual water resource operation ideals.
